Total Number of JP Domain Name Registration Reaches 800,000

- Japanese JP Domain Name Exceeds 118,000 -

On March 2, 2006, JPRS announced that the accumulated total of registered JP domain name as of March 1, 2006 exceeded 800,000, marking 801,997. The number of registered Japanese JP domain name reached 118,450, hitting a record high. This number of Japanese JP domain name, which accounts for 15% of whole JP domain name, is the second largest number of registered IDN among the 248 ccTLDs worldwide next to .de (Germany), tying for second place with .tw (Taiwan). According to the breakdown of these 801,997 names, the number of General-Use JP Domain Name in the form of "EXAMPLE.JP" is 453,285 (ASCII: 334,835; and Japanese: 118,450.) And the number of Organizational/Geographic Type JP Domain Name, such as "EXAMPLE.CO.JP" and "EXAMPLE.NE.JP", is 348,712.

Compared to a year ago (March 1, 2005), Organizational/Geographic Type JP Domain Name increased by 6% and General-Use JP Domain Name increased by 31%, with an increase of 19% as a whole. Above all, the number of registered Japanese JP domain name increased by 36,808, from 81,642 to 118,450, making a leap forward with an increase of 145%.

This leap in the number of Japanese JP domain name is attributed to the fact that its user environment was improved, resulting in acceleration of registration as well as utilization. Especially, the release of the new version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer which has IDN function and JPRS's efforts in exploring the usage of Japanese JP domain names are considered to have served as a momentum for this growth.

At present, user environment of Japanese JP domain name is being improved rapidly. For example, major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and goo correspond to Japanese JP domain name and display URL's as their search results in the form of Japanese JP domain name. Registration and utilization of Japanese JP domain name that is "easy to understand and remember" has been effectively facilitated.
