Cumulative Number of Registered General-Use JP Domain Names Exceeds 330,000, Surpassing Organizational/Geographic Type JP Domain Names - Total Number of JP Domain Name Reached 660,000 -

Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. (JPRS: Chiyoda-ku Tokyo, President Koki Higashida), the company responsible for management and administration of .JP top-level domain and overall management and operation of the JP domain name system (JP DNS), today announced that the accumulated total of registered General-use JP domain names ("EXAMPLE.JP") as of February 1, 2005 had reached 338,865. It also announced that this number surpassed the cumulative sum of Organizational/Geographic Type JP domain names ("EXAMPLE.CO.JP") registration, totaling 328,716, for the first time since the start of the registration service of General-use JP Domain Name Registration in February, 2001.

According to a breakdown of the number of registered General-use JP domain names as of February 1, 2005, the number of ASCII General-use JP domain names (consisting of alphanumeric characters) was 259,310, while the number of Japanese General-use JP domain names was 79,555, and both figures reached record levels. In particular, the number of Japanese JP domain names registered within the month of January, 2005 was 16,231, which also hit the record of per-month registration after the start-up registration period from February to May, 2001. Major factor behind this steep increase is considered to be the accelerated usages of Japanese JP domain names in various fields.

In line with the General-use JP domain names, the number of registered Organizational/Geographic Type JP domain names has also increased smoothly from 238,519 as of February 2001 to 328,716, bringing 90,000 more names within 4 years. Among others, the number of "CO.JP" domain name registration has increased by more than 70,000 from 192,097 to 266,956.

With regard to the big leap in the registration of General-use JP domain names and "CO.JP" domain names, several factors are considered: more and more companies have started up their corporate Websites with "CO.JP" domain names; companies operate Websites not only for their company names but also for each of their products and services using multiple General-use JP domain names (for example, Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. runs both corporate Website http://www.fujifilm.co.jp/ and products and services Website http://fujifilm.jp/); and increasing number of individuals are opening Websites with unique domain names.
